Importance:
M.U. Educational and Wisconsin DPI Standard #1 is important because it helps current teachers and future teachers understand the various concepts they are teaching, the misconceptions and multiple perspectives students may have and assists teachers in developing a curriculum that is useful, accurate, links ideas to previous knowledge and challenges students to question and interpret ideas from various perspectives. This standard is put in place to ensure that teachers have a good framework to base their lessons off of and so that ALL students feel connected and in tune with the material no matter what their background may be. The teacher must be aware that students are coming from very different backgrounds and may hold various misconceptions about a given topic. If a teacher is aware of this, it becomes easier for he or she to adapt his or her lesson plan to effectively cater to the needs of all students and ensure that learning and growth will take place.
